Guidelines and rules for photo-travelers and travelers Ladakh, Zanskar and Spiti (Little Tibet).

Short info

To meet Spring in Ladakh, Small Tibet, Northern India.
Travel is aimed at photographers of any level and active tourists from all over the world.

Photo Tour "The Land of Shambhala" traditionally opens our seasons in Ladakh since 2013.
Yes, the canvas of travel varies from year to year, but we keep the name.
Because the very name of this journey is a good metaphor for the beginning of the season in the highlands, that for the beginning of a new period in life and photography, saturated with light, pure, saturating energies of Ladakh - from the smile of the old Tibetan grandmother to the transparent ringing air, which I do not even want inhale, and drink and drink with sips, whither here are oxygen cocktails - our air is soaked with herbs, the breath of high mountains, something completely beyond the reach.
But this is so - the lyrics, and now essentially on the journey itself:
The May photo tour around Little Tibet is a wonderful opportunity to get to know the culture and way of life of Tibetan Buddhism, preserved in the valleys of Ladakh, Da Khan and Lamayuru in its original form.

Юные ламы из буддийского монастыря Ламаюру Гонпа, тур по Ладакху, май 2018 года.

The route of the tour goes to places that tourists usually do not visit and are as close as possible to an individual tour:
a small group (8 people), a professional escort team (guide-guides, guide-photographer, Tibetan guide) will allow each participant to study the culture of Small Tibet and take photos in a comfortable for themselves mode, focusing on a more interesting for themselves photography - the landscape can safely shoot landscapes, while lovers of ethnographic photography can attend the puja in a monastery or take pictures in the homes of local residents.
During the May photo tour around Ladakh (Tibet) we will visit the monasteries of the Ladakh and Lamayuru valleys, visit the monastic schools where the young lamas study, we will be present and take pictures on the puja (services) in the monasteries, we can calmly and dimensionally photograph inside the Buddhist gonts of Lesser Tibet. Our guide guides in many monasteries will be Lamas and Abbesses of the Monasteries.
It should also be noted that the route of this photo tour through the valleys of Ladakh, Da Hanu, Lamayuru and Lake Pangong Tso passes through the most beautiful high-mountain valleys and in a very correct time for landscape photography:
in the spring in our highlands it's not just light and clean, no - the air literally rings and sparkles with its transparency, like a huge magnifying glass design-draws the slightest detail.
So, the photo tour to Tibet provides a lot of ethnographic, landscape, portrait photography, and - for those who wish - still-life photography in the Monasteries of Ladakh.
The idea of still-life photography was born in our previous photo tours of the valleys of Lesser Tibet:
in Tibetan monasteries there are many attractive places that will be interesting for photographing still lifes - from monastic kitchens with huge ovens, old pans and scoops of various sizes, vegetables piled into picturesque piles to the secret corners of monasteries, in which picturesque objects of cult and old rags.
From our experience - in the monasteries are very loyal to our photography and the possibility of "drawing" Tibetan still lifes here are almost limitless.
Therefore, for photographers shooting still-lifes, in May there will be such an unusual opportunity.
Why in May?
Because at this time there are not many tourists here yet and it is possible to shoot slowly and slowly, no one specifically puts it.
This photo tour of Little Tibet is designed for photographers of any level (from pros to amateurs) and simply curious, leisurely travelers.
By the way, if you wish, there will be many opportunities to attend the puja and ceremonies in monasteries, visit the monastery libraries, and finally just meditate in very clean streams, which are also called the Places of Power.
In general - to meet the Spring in Ladakh.

Tour detailed description

Most of the photos shown in the description of the journey of the Earth of Shambhala are clickable to a large size, just click on the photo and it will open in a new window.
All photos were taken during the Ladakh tour in May 2012 - 2017, these are the real places that you will visit and see with your own eyes.
In the description of each day, the total mileage per day is indicated.

Day 1, May 1: Delhi - Leh (air travel). Acclimatization to height. Walks around the Old Town.
Arrival at New Delhi International Airport.
Transfer from Delhi International Airport to the airport of domestic airlines (performed inside the airport by a free bus), and a flight on the Delhi-Leh route.
This is a common practice in our photo tours in Small Tibet: flights where participants arrive at Delhi airport.
Usually they arrive at the D3 terminal from 2 am to 5 am, after which they immediately move to the shuttle at the terminal D1 and one of the morning flights fly to Leh.
Flights to Delhi-Leh flights will be taken so that the time reserve between the external and domestic flights is at least 3-4 hours.
The flight Delhi-Leh itself is a separate photo-action, the plane flies over the most beautiful peaks of the Himalayas.
It is highly recommended that when buying air tickets immediately book places near the portholes.
For those who want to photograph mountain ranges from an airplane, the most suitable seats will be those with 25F to 30F.

In May, high mountains are still in the snow, this is a very unusual sight - the interlacing of snow-covered chains of mountains alternating with glacial trough valleys filled with snow-white ice.
Almost painting.

Arrival in Leh: at the airport of Lech immediately at the exit of the participants meets the guide with a colorful sign PHOTOTUR.

Transfer to the hotel, breakfast.
Leh is at an altitude of 3600 m.
And on the first day of the photo tour for the participants it is very important to pass the correct altitude acclimatization: we pass the acclimatization training, drink a lot of liquid, the first hours on arrival rest at the hotel.
After acclimatization rest in the hotel we go on a leisurely adaptive walk through the narrow streets of Old Lech: adobe houses, Buddhist stupas and prayer wheels.
The old town of Lech was included in the list of the World Monuments Fund of UNESCO.
We'll finish our walk in the Soma Gompa Monastery, in the central part of Old Lech.
In the evening, a master class on ethnographic photography in Tibet.
Hotel in Leh.

Day 2, May 2: Leh. Monastery of Namgyal Tsemo. Monastery Spituk Gonpa. The village of Spituk, about 24 km.
In the morning on the cars we go to Buddhist Monastery Namgyal Tsemo.
The monastery and fortress Namgyal Tsemo, the "red fortress", were built in the 16th century by King Tashi Namgyal.
The monastery houses a three-story statue of the Buddha-Maitreya.
Also the monastery is famous for its collection of ancient manuscripts and frescoes.
The monastery belongs to the tradition of Gelug.
From the top of the Namgyal Tsemo complex, you have a magnificent panoramic view of the Lech Valley on one side and the other on the world's highest road pass, Cardung La.

Буддийский монастырь Намгьял Тсемо, Лех, Ладакх. Фототур в Ладакх, май 2018 года.

After Namgyal Tsemo we will visit the Japanese Stupa Shanti (Stupa of Peace), from which a magnificent view of the Ladakh valley opens.
For an easy lunch we go down to the center of Lech.
After lunch we go to Buddhist monastery Spituk.

Buddhist Monastery Spituk Gompa, Spituk Monastery - was founded in the 11th century and its name Spituk - "exemplary" was received from Rinchen Zangpo, admired in an exemplary way of life of local monks.
The monastery is built in the form of a fortress on a high cliff.

Буддийский монастырь Спитук Гонпа, Лех, Ладакх. Майский тур в Ладакх, 2018 год.

Originally belonged to the tradition of Kadam-pa, then passed to the Kagyu tradition, from the 15th century belongs to the tradition of Gelugpa.
The rector of the monastery (Rinpoche) is known for his enlightening activities and the creation of the Ladakh education system.
The monastery is decorated with frescoes, sculptures and tanks, some of which are brought here from Tibet after the Chinese invasion, there is a collection of antique weapons.
In the assembly hall (dukhang), a throne is established for the Dalai Lama.
After visiting Spituk Gompa, we descend the high stone staircase of the eastern part of the gong to the village of Spituk.
Walking through the village among the ancient stupas and local houses, photographing the Ladakh valley in the evening light.
Hotel in Leh.

Day 3, May 3: Ladakh. The valley of the Zanskar river. Chelliing Gorge, 82 km.
Today is an incredibly beautiful day.

In the morning on the cars we will go for a walk along Ladakh, downstream of the Indus River.
First landscape photography:
the Hindu valley, the confluence of the rivers Indus and Zanskar.

Слияние рек Инд и Занскар, долина Ладакх. Туры в Ладакх, 2018 год.

Further we will go down to the floodplain of the Zanskar river, to the confluence of the Hindus and Zanskar and go to the Chelling gorge to the upper reaches of the Zanskar river, to the mountain village of Chelling.

Долина Ладакх, ущелье Челлинг, Малый Тибет, Индия. Туры в Ладакх, 2018 год.

In Ladakh everything is unusual, but even at the level of this all, Chelling knows how to impress:
in the gorge complete silence, ringing, interrupted by the soft rustling of the river - the river is rustling and shimmering.
Like a huge mythical snake with an endless oily aquamarine body, the river crawls and twists among the multicolored rocks, polishing the bard boulders that have fallen into the riverbed.
And in the midst of this wild, powerful splendor - the gentle white heels of sandy beaches with soft quartz sand, heated in the sun - the nights are drowning and basking in it, enjoying.

Верховья ущелья Челлинг, река Занскар, Ладакх. Туры в Ладакх, 2018 год.

We continue our journey: from Chelling to the village of Basgo.
On the way, photography in the floodplain of the Hindu, magnificent views of the mountain gorges and Buddhist villages, settled among the rocky mountains, fields - the magnificent geometry of the fields, cultivated at this time by manual plows, harnessed dzo (cross between yak and cow) and even more huge yaks.
Otanovka for lunch in the village of Nimo.
The local tavern in the village of Nimo became famous throughout Ladakh for the most delicious vegetarian samos and air cakes from tsampa, mountain barley.
Rarely, who from Ladakh people pass by, everyone stops here - it's too tasty, to have a bite or take samosy with them home.
There are many people there, and almost the right chance to combine dinner with a magnificent photo.

And after dinner - on - to the incredible Buddhist monastery of Basgo Gonpa, hovering in the air amid burgundy rocks over the village of the same name.

Буддийский монастырь Басго Гонпа, деревня Басго, тур по Ладакху, май 2018 года.

Buddhist Monastery Basgo, Basgo Gompa - built in 1680 by the rulers of the Namgyal dynasty.
Basco itself was known from antiquity and is mentioned in the Ladakh Chronicles as a political and cultural center and the former capital of Lower Ladakh.
The monastery is famous for its unique frescoes of the 16th century and the Buddha statue.
Basgo Gompa stands on steep rocks and has a stunning panorama of the surrounding area.

Буддийский монастырь Басго, вид на долину Басго, тур по Ладакху, май 2018 года.

It's infinitely beautiful: probably, Basgo Gonpa is still the most unusual Buddhist monastery in Ladakh.
Located Basgo Gonpa in the steep bard rock, the very territory of the monastery - is a completely incredible landscapes.
You can wander around indefinitely.
Than we also will be engaged.

Return to Leh.
Hotel in Leh.

Day 4, May 4: Ladakh. Monasteries Stakna Gonpa and Tiksi Gonpa. The white stupas of Shay Gonpa, 47 km.
Early in the morning we go to the monastery Stakna (the panorama is clickable to a large size).

Буддийский монастырь Стагна Гонпа, Ладакх. Туры в Ладакх, 2018 год.

Buddhist Monastery The Stakna Monastery (Stakna Gompa) is a small and very beautiful Buddhist monastery of the Drukpa Kagyu tradition.
Stakna Gompa was founded in the late 16th century by the Bhutan scholar and Lama Chosje Jamyang Palkar.
The name Stakna Gompa literally translates as "tiger's nose", and given to the monastery because it stands on a hill resembling a tiger.
In the gompa is the famous statue of Arya Avalokiteshvara from Camrup.
In the monastery there are about 30 monks.
Stakna Gompa is also interesting because it is the only monastery in the Ladakh valley, where Bhutanese influence is traced: from the very atmosphere of the monastery to the frescoes of the 16th century, with which the prayer room is decorated.
In the monastery a very interesting still-life photographing with ancient and modern Buddhist attributes of the monastery lamas is possible.
From the roof and viewing platforms of Stakna Gonpa, you can enjoy magnificent views of the Ladakh valley and the Buddhist monastery of Tiksi Gonpa.

Вид с крыши буддийского монастыря Стакна Гонпа, Ладакх. Туры в Ладакх, 2018 год.

We spend the second half of the day in the Buddhist Monastery of Tiksi Gonpa.
The monastery itself is huge - the largest in Ladakh, in fact a monastery town, with surrounding villages, surrounded by ancient stupas, lamas houses, monastic schools.
The monastery of Tiksi Gonpa consists of twelve levels and ten temples, towering on the slopes of the mountain. At the very top are private apartments Rinpoche Gonpa.
Below the monastery itself, along the mountain slopes, there are chapels and houses of monks.
Now here live about 100 Buddhist monks of Gelug school.
From the roof of the monastery are photographed wonderful panoramas to the valley of Ladakh.
Lunch at the monastery of Tiksi Gonpa.

Буддийский монастырь Тиксей Гонпа, Ладакх. Тур в Ладакх, май 2018 года.

And finish the day with a visit to the Buddhist Monastery and Shey Gonpa Palace.
Buddhist monastery of Shey Gompa is a complex consisting of Gompa and Shey Palace on Shay hill, in the past Shey was the summer capital of Ladakh.
The palace, built in 1655 by the king of Ladakh Deldan Namgyal, is now in some confusion, which does not interfere with photographing at the palace, but on the contrary - makes the photographs even more original.
The monastery-gompa Shey was also erected in 1655 by the order of the king, in memory of his father, Sange Namgyale, outside the palace.
In the monastery a copper statue of the sitting Buddha Shakyamuni was installed, this statue became famous throughout Ladakh and then it was the second largest - 12 meters.
The monastery belongs to the tradition of Gelug.
From the roof of the palace offers magnificent views, expanse for panoramic photography, than we will do in the evening sun.
Next to Shey Gonpa there is the field of the White Stupas, among which more than 10 centuries ago the Buddhist Teacher Yogi Naropa meditated.
Among the White Stupa of the neck, the sense of time and space is lost and, perhaps, it is here that the most beautiful evening photography.

Белые ступы вблизи буддийского монастыря Шей Гонпа, Ладакх. Туры в Ладакх, 2018 год.

Hotel in Leh.

Day 5, May 5: Lake Pangong Tso, 370 km.
We get up very early in the morning, have breakfast and drive to Lake Pangong Cho.

On the way, we will have a wonderful Ladakh attraction: a glade with manual Tibetan marmot (large red marmots).
The story is this:
very long time, about 6 - 7 years ago, Indian tourists fed on this meadow marmot cookies.
Surks were offered keksiki and pechenyushki to choose from, first rushed, then marmot came closer and closer, and from some point they took refreshments from their hands.
It got to the point that mummies began to go out on the road and watch on the pre-stone stones in anticipation of cars with tourists and already rushed to meet them, demanding a treat.
At that moment, the ecological services of Ladakh justly intervened, banning the feeding of animals with unpleasant delicacies.
But the ban only affected the tourists, the marmots were still tame - they fit 1-2 meters, they carefully look at the guests and positively posing for photos.

Lake Pangong.
View photos taken at Lake Pangong: Lake Pangong Tso, Ladakh, Lesser Tibet.

Lake Pangong Tso is located at an altitude of about 4250 m and is located on the very border of Ladakh with Tibet.
The length of the lake is 134 km, width is 5 km. Lake itself is 1/3 owned by Ladakha (India) and 2/3 by Tibet (Tibetan territories under the occupation of China).
A lot of beautiful landscape photography.

Майский тур на озеро Пангонг Цо, Ладакх, Малый Тибет, Индия, 2018 год.

Then we leave for Leh, according to the road we already know, but here we are waiting for numerous stops for photography - the evening sun will make the morning landscapes unrecognizable.
We stop for a photo shoot in all the interesting places, which in the evening light really do look quite different.

Тур в Ладакх, Малый Тибет, Индия, май 2018 года.

Late in the evening we return to Leh.
Hotel in Leh.

Day 6, May 6: Leh. Old town, bazar. Free day in Leh.
Free day in Leh: Rest. We clean feathers and photo equipment.
We review and disassemble the footage.
We drink sweet-smelling coffee with pirozhenkami and pies in cafes of Lech on Main Market.
We walk around the old town:
thin winding streets with dilapidated ancient houses, among which you can wander forever.
Hotel in Leh.

Day 7, May 7: Da Hanu Valley, the village of Da. Portrait photography, 270 km.
Perhaps, it will be a very busy day - and eventful, and emotionally, and, first of all - by photography.
Early in the morning we leave to the valley of Da-Hanu, to the village of Yes.
The very gorge of Da-Hanu is very beautiful - the mountains here consist of multi-colored rocks, and in themselves represent magnificent natural pictures.

Горные картины ущелья Да Хану, фототур в Ладакх, май 2018 года.

Snow-white Tibetan stupas and Buddhist monasteries create absolutely incredible landscapes of the valley of Da-Hanu.

Гонпы ущелья Да Хану, фототур в Ладакх, май 2018 года.

Landscapes in Da-Hanu are absolutely fantastic.
Then we start with numerous stops for landscape photography to move towards the Aryan village of Yes.

The villages of the Dha-Hanu valley:
Around 2000 people live in Ladakh of Aryans and live in the territory of 5 villages and only marry within their ethnic group.
It was in these villages that Hitler organized expeditions "for the Aryan blood".

At present, there are two Dardish tribes in the territory of the former Ladakh kingdom, who have retained their native language:
the Dardas from the Dragon, and the Dardas from Da (Dha).
The first became Muslims in the 16th century.
The most interesting case is represented by darts from Da (Dha - Hanu).
They did not accept Muhammad's faith, but Buddhism was not fully accepted by them either - their religious practices more closely resemble the ancient pre-Buddhist religion of Bon.
Thanks to this, they were able to preserve their cultural uniqueness.
Their external dissimilarity and feature is not only in the form and features of the face, but also in the details of the clothes they wear.
All men and women wear a headdress, the main ornament of which is the red flowers of the Physalis (wild strawberries), which protect them from demons and bring wealth.
In all forms of art, the symbols of the swastika and the sun are present in the drkpa: carved ornaments on houses, ornaments of antique utensils and household utensils.
There are also many natural and astronomical symbols.
Drkpa surprisingly combine mixed traditions with respect to food - they do not eat poultry meat and cows, but keep them for eggs and milk.
Eat only lamb.

Арийская женщина из деревни Да, ущелье Да Хану, Ладакх. Тур в Ладакх, май 2018 года.

We will spend 2-3 hours in the village:
Visit to the local school, stone houses of the village, which are made up of accurately tailored river stones without the use of cementing mass.
Also we will visit the local temple and visit the houses of local residents.
If desired, you can agree in advance on the staged portrait photography in national costumes.
Late in the evening we return to Leh.
Hotel in Leh.

Day 8, May 8: Iggy Kaspan Monastery, about 100 km.
Today we will go to the remote monastery Iggo Kaspan (Drukpa Kagyu school), located far from the tourist routes, in the guidebooks there is no mention of this monastery.
Igto Caspan Gonpa is high in the mountains, in a small gorge and glorious in the first place by what is considered the best place for meditation - here really piercingly quiet and calm.
About the Buddhist monastery Iggo caspan goes a lot of different rumors, one of the tries - that the lamas here not only meditate, but also engage in levitation.
If we are lucky, then we will go on this trip with our Teacher Lama Tserin and then a special Buddhist puja (service) will be held for us.
If not - then just talk with the lamas of the monastery, there are few of them and many of them are elderly.
In any case - tourists in these blessed places are almost never there.
The whole day - landscape and portrait photography in remote areas of the Igto gorge.
On the way back we will stop and in the village of Iggo, which preserves its original way of life.

On the way to Leh we will visit another remote monastery of Ladakh - an amazing Buddhist city-monastery of Chimre (Chamray) Gonpa, located also in the valley of the river Sakti.
There are many curious things here:
The numerous gong halls, whose walls still bear to this day, preserve the vivid ancient paintings,
The richest monastery museum of Ladakh with ancient manuscripts, objects of ritual sacraments and objects of everyday life,
and from the roof of the monastery you can see endless views of the valley of the river Sakti and the surrounding villages - like a bird soaring in the sky - a great time and place for evening photography.
What will we do at sunset this day.

Buddhist monastery Lamayuru Gonpa (XI century) - one of the oldest monasteries of Ladakh, existed in pre-Buddhist times, belonged to the Bon religion and was called Yungdrung (swastika).
In its place in the XI century, a Buddhist monastery was founded, belonging to the Nyingma-pa sect (Red Hats).
It is believed that the creation of the monastery was facilitated by the famous Tibetan guru and yogi Naropa, who meditated for several years in a cave near the monastery.
The monastery houses a magnificent collection of tanks and wall paintings, a large number of shrines and relics.
