Here there are answers to all questions regarding the conditions of the tour and preparation for it:

Recommendations and rules for photo travelers and travelers on Ladakh, Zanskar and Spiti Valley (Small Tibet).

Short info

The June photo tour of Ladakh makes it possible to meet with the most ancient monasteries, primitive cultures, Bonovian sacred rituals of Ladakh, and Lesser Tibet.
In this sense, the photo tour completely corresponds to its name: we really will come into contact with the origins of the culture of Tibetan Buddhism, the Origins of Tibet.

The July tour of Tibet this year turned out to be extremely eventful in all respects -
places that we visit, photography - there is expected an abundance of landscape photography and an abundance of very unusual ethnographic photography:
We will visit the distant villages of the Da Hannu valley, almost adjacent to the Pakistani border, where the entrance to tourists until 2013 was completely closed, but now we need a special permit, moreover - we will spend 2 days in a village where we had no tourists at all.
And, of course, the Dance of Tsam on the Buddhist mystery in the Bonam monastery of Lamayuru.
The key moments of the photo tour The origins of Tibet are:
1. Buddhist mystery Yuru Kabgyat (Yura Kabgyat) in the monastery of Lamayuru, accompanied by the execution by the lamas of high dedications of the Tsam Dance - Mask Dance, a sacred ritual and a bright, unforgettable spectacle.
2. Introduction to the Bon religion: at present, the Tibetan religion Bon is the most ancient religious tradition of the planet Earth. We will visit the Bonov monasteries and villages of ethnic nationalities, who are still the bearers of Bon culture.
3. Photographing in Dha-Khan - the villages of the true Aryans. In the west of Ladakh, near the Pakistani border, there lives a people known as a drokpa or darda, which in Ladak and Tibetan means "nomad". Unlike Ladak, who are of Tibeto-Mongolian origin, the dardas are the descendants of the Aryans. They come from before the Indo-Aryan tribes and retain their racial purity for centuries, not mixing with other nationalities and limiting marriages to their community and strictly prohibiting contacts with strangers. It was in these villages that Hitler organized expeditions "for the Aryan blood". Located near the border, this area is almost closed to foreign tourists. A special permit is required to get there.
4. Visiting and photographing in the most ancient village of the Aryans of Hannu-Yokma: stone houses, photography at school, the temple of the village.
5. Beautiful non-tourist mountain areas Ladakha, Lamayuru and Da Hannu: an abundance of landscape photography throughout the entire photo tour.
6. Highland Lake Pangong Tso, and again - a trip to remote areas of the lake, almost to the borderline.

Tour detailed description

Most of the photos shown in the description of the journey to the origins of Tibet are clickable to a large size, just click on the photo and it will open in a new window.
All photos were taken during our tours of Ladakh and Lamayuru in the period 2012 - 2018, these are the real places that you will visit and see with your own eyes.
In the description of each day, the total mileage per day is indicated.

Day 1, June 26: Delhi - Leh (air travel). Acclimatization to height. Walks around the Old Town.
Arrival at New Delhi International Airport.
Transfer from Delhi International Airport to the airport of domestic airlines (performed inside the airport by a free bus), and a flight on the Delhi-Leh route.
This is a common practice in our photo tours in Little Tibet: flights to which participants arrive at Delhi airport usually arrive at the D3 terminal from 2 to 5 am, immediately move to the shuttle terminal at Terminal D1 and one of the morning flights fly to Leh .
Flights to Delhi-Leh flights will be taken so that the time reserve between the external and domestic flights is at least 3-4 hours.
The flight Delhi-Leh itself is a separate photo-action, the plane flies over the most beautiful peaks of the Himalayas.

Himalayan Range, Tibet, Ladakh. Photo tours in Ladakh, 2019.

It is highly recommended that when buying air tickets immediately book places near the portholes.
For those who want to photograph mountain ranges from an airplane, the most suitable seats will be those with 25F to 30F.

We fly to Ladakh, the plane turns over the valley and sits at the only airport in the valley - in Lehi.

Arrival in Leh: at the airport of Lech immediately at the exit of the participants meets the guide with a colorful sign PHOTOTUR.

Transfer to the hotel, breakfast.
Leh is at an altitude of 3600 m.
And on the first day of the photo tour for the participants it is very important to pass the correct altitude acclimatization: we pass the acclimatization training, drink a lot of liquid, the first hours on arrival rest at the hotel.
After acclimatization rest in the hotel we go on a leisurely adaptive walk through the narrow streets of Old Lech: adobe houses, Buddhist stupas and prayer wheels.

Panorama of Lech, tours to Ladakh, June 2019.

The old town of Lech was included in the list of the World Monuments Fund of UNESCO.
We'll finish our walk in the Soma Gompa Monastery, in the central part of Old Lech.
In the evening, a lecture on the introduction of Tibetan Buddhism into the culture.
Hotel in Leh.

Day 2, June 27: Monastery of Tiksey Gonpa, monastery of Shey Gonpa, White Stupa of Naropa, 52 km.
We leave for Buddhist monastery Tiksey Gonpa.
This is a good start to get acquainted with the culture of Tibetan Buddhism:
The monastery of Tiksey Gonpa is the largest in central Ludkha.
It seems to come down from the top of the hill, settling down on its slope, and the most important buildings are on the top, and the less significant ones below.
The monastery strongly resembles Potala in Lhasa, Tibet, the former palace of the Dalai Lama.
Therefore, Tiksey Gonpa is often called the 'Mini Potala'.
The monastery Tiksey, as well as Lech, is located at an altitude of 3600 above sea level, in the headwaters of the Indus, 19 km from Lech.
This is a huge 12-storey complex of buildings with chortens, statues, thangas, frescoes, and weapons (swords are kept in the sanctuaries of Dharmapal).
Remarkable and new Temple of Buddha Matreya, built for the visit of His Holiness the Dalai Lama XIV in 1970.
The 15-meter statue of Maitreya, the largest in today's Ladakh, occupies two floors.
In the complex of Tiksey Gonpa there is also a nearby convent.

Buddhist monastery Tiksey Gonpa, photo tour of Ladakh, June 2019.

There is something to do for the whole day and more:
The walls of the monastery store ancient paintings, eaten by time, they still literally fascinate.

Ancient paintings in the Buddhist monastery of Tiksey Gonpa, photo tour of Ladakh, June 2019.

In the gongs - thangki, whose age is up to 1000 years, an excellent library.
Perhaps we will be lucky and we will get a puja (service) in the Temple of Dharma Defenders of the monastery.

Ancient Thongs of the Tibetan Monastery of Tibsey Gonpa, Photo Tour of the Origins of Tibet, July 2019.

Also on the territory of the monastery is the department of the clinic of Tibetan Astrology and Medicine - Men-dze-Khang, if you want, you can go through pulse diagnostics (free of charge) and buy the recommended by the doctor natural preparations.
Lunch at a restaurant in the Tiksi Gonpa Monastery.

After lunch, leisurely we set off towards the ancient monastery of Shey Gonpa and the White Stupa of Naropa.
If desired, we can walk on foot, here only 3 km and very beautiful shooting places - the road passes among the fields of the village of Tiksey Gonpa.

We reach the Buddhist monastery of Shey Gonpa and at sunset we walk among the White Stupas, where the Great Teacher of Naroda meditated and practiced Buddhist practices.
In this place, space and time just froze - the field of the White Stup outside the space, beyond time - it's an amazing place, and the end of the day is the most beautiful time for photography here:

The brittle stupas of Naropa, photo tour of Ladakh, July 2019.

From here you can enjoy magnificent views of the Tiksi Gonpa Monastery, which we visited in the morning.

Hotel in Leh.

Day 3, June 28: Alchi Gonpa, Highland village of Wanla. Monastery of Wanla Gonpa. The moon earth. Lamayuru, 157 km.
Early in the morning we leave in the direction of the valley of Lamayuru, downstream of the Indus River.
On the way there are numerous stops in all the interesting places for landscape photography, for example, the confluence of the rivers Indus and Zanskar.

The confluence of the rivers Indus and Zanskar, Ladakh, Lesser Tibet, India. Tours in Ladakh, 2019.

Through these mountain landscapes we will move to Buddhist monastic complex Alchi Gonpa.
Alchi is located on the banks of the Indus River at an altitude of 3250 m and 65 km from Lech (to the west).
The rest of the day we will spend in Alchi and adjacent villages to the monastery complex.

Buddhist complex of Alchi, photo tour of Ladakh, June 2019.

Buddhist monastery Alchi Gonpa is a Buddhist complex of temples, whose age exceeds 1000 years.
The monastery is the four temples of different periods surrounding the village of Alchi, Alchi Gompa - the oldest and largest structure.
The monastery of Alchi is now subordinated to the abbot of the Buddhist monastery Likir Gompa.
The monastery of Alchi was built by the great lama (guru) Rinchen Sanpo (958-1055).
The monastic records mention the Tibetan aristocrat Kaldan Sherab, who lived in the middle of the XI century, some researchers consider him the founder of the monastery complex Alchi Gonpa.
The village of Alchi is included in the group of villages that make up the Alchi Monastery complex, in addition to Alchi are adjacent Mangdu and Sundang Chung (now it is the Zanskar district).
The monuments of these villages are unique in style and craftsmanship, and that's where we will go after lunch.
The monastic complex of Alchi is unique: the artistic and spiritual characteristics of Buddhism and Hinduism are intertwined here with ancient Kashmiri traditions, as a result of which the murals of the monastery are especially interesting.
In old Kashmir, Hinduism and Buddhism were equally revered, and Alchi, built by Kashmiris, bears the imprint of this style.
The frescoes of the monastery are the oldest in the Ladakh valley.
In total, only two such monastic complexes have survived on our planet, in which Kashmir frescoes of a thousand years ago have been preserved: in Alchi and in Tabo, and both of them are unique, and are protected by the UNESCO Monuments Fund.
The Buddhist complex of Alchi includes huge Buddha statues, temples decorated with wood carvings of incredible beauty.
Alchi is beautiful, here we will meet completely with another Buddhism - Kashmir Buddhism, which existed more than 1,000 years ago.
And, by the way, it is in Alchi that the oldest Wheel of Samsara is in the world.

Wheel of Sansara (Wheel of Life) in the Buddhist monastery of Alchi. Photo Tour The origins of Tibet, June 2019.

After Alchi we will continue our journey and visit the ancient high mountain village of Van La.
Wan La is away from the main road and tourists hardly ever come here, but it is in Wanle that one of the oldest temples of the Lamayuru Valley, Wanla Gonpa, is located.
The villagers themselves belong to the Aryan group of the Drok Pa.
These tribes are both racially and culturally very different from the rest of the inhabitants of the Ladakh valley.
The religion of the Drok Pa is more reminiscent of the Bon religion (it is the original religion of Tibet).
Van Gonpa itself is a work of art, and in time refers to the same period as Alchi Gonpa, but the preservation of the ancient monastery of Van La is amazing:
in contrast to the many-visited Alchi, here everything remained practically in its original form.

We continue to move towards Lamayura.
A lot of landscape photography is planned: in Lamayuru we will get to the country of lunar landscapes, the legendary place Moon Land.
It is impossible to describe this place with words, it is necessary to see and photograph it.

Lower road Lech - Lamayuru, Moon Land. Photo tour of Ladakh, June 2019.

And closer to the evening we arrive at the Buddhist monastery Lamayuru Gonpa (Jungdrun - this is the sign of the swastika) - one of the earliest monasteries of Ladakh, its construction is attributed to Rinchen Sanpo (958-1055).
The monastery was founded in the XI century by the famous Teacher Naropa, after spending several years in meditation in the cave.

Bonov Monastery Lamayuru Gonpa, photo tour of Ladakh, June 2019.

The monastery got its name from the plantation of sacred grain, which mysteriously took the form of a swastika (a swastika with a left-hand movement symbolizes Jungdrun Bon or a new Bon).
Now the Monastery of Lamayuru refers to the direction of the Buddhist school of Drikung Kagyu, but for a long time was a refuge for the followers of the Bon religion.

Buddhist monastery of Lamayuru Gonpa. Tours to Lamayuru, Ladakh, Small Tibet, 2019.

Guest house at the monastery of Lamayuru Gonpa.

Day 4, June 29: Monastery of Lamayuru Gonpa. Buddhist mystery Yuru Kabgyat (Yuri Kabgyat), 1 day. Dance Tsam.
And the next two days we will witness and participate in the incredibly beautiful ancient Buddhist mystery of Yura Kabgyat with the performance of Dance Tsam - Dance of Lam high initiations in the masks of defenders of the Dharma.

Early in the morning we are present at the morning fire puja of the Buddhist holiday Yuru Kabgyat (Yuri Kabgyat).
Next day we take pictures in the monastery of Lamayuru on Buddhist mystery Yuru Kabgyat: Sacred Dances Lam, Dance Tsam.
There will be a lot of bright ethnographic portrait and genre photography.

Any Mystery of the Tsam Dance is an unforgettable sight, and in Lamayuru Gonpa the holiday Yuru Kabgyat (Yuri Kabgyat) has also very Bonn roots:
from the morning fiery puja to the very end of the mystery.
Photography is fully authorized.

Dance Tsam, Lamayuru Gonpa. Photo tour of Ladakh, June 2019.

Talk about Buddhist mysteries with the performance of the Dance of Tsam - in moderation useless -
this is an incredible action, words can not describe it - there is too much happening and at all levels:
from a simply grandiose bright incredible spectacle, when the square is facing 54 Masks, led by the majestic Mahakala - captures from rapture,
to subtle levels of consciousness - in fact, any Buddhist mystery is a very thorough cleansing at the level of the mind, body, and consciousness, and often in the life of a person very much changes after the mystery.
This is not a theatrical action, it is a very powerful energy process, perhaps one of the most honest and real today, coming to us from the depths of millennia.
Guest house at the monastery of Lamayuru Gonpa.

Day 5, June 30: Monastery of Lamayuru Gonpa. Buddhist mystery Yuru Kabgyat (Yuri Kabgyat), 2 day. Dance Tsam.
The second day of Buddhist mystery Yuru Kabgyat (Yuri Kabgyat).
Early in the morning - puja in the Monastery of Lamayuru, then from morning till evening we take pictures of Buddhist mystery Yuru Kabgyat in the monastery yard.

Dance Tsam, Lamayuru Gonpa. Photo tour of Ladakh, June 2019.

During the day - photography in the monastery complex Lamayuru Gonpa.
In the evening - ethnographic photography in the village of Lamayuru.

Buddhist monastery of Lamayuru Gonpa. Photo tour of Ladakh, June 2019.

For two days in the village of Lamayuru, there will be almost no free time - as planned:
- visiting the meditation center in Lamayuru,
- very active photography in the evenings in the village of Lamayuru,
- Morning and evening photography of the landscapes of Moon Land and the Red Mountains from the upper army road - our cars will leave there early in the morning and for evening photography.
Photos from the valley of Lamayuru can be viewed in our photo gallery: Lamayuru Valley + photos.

Red mountains, Lamayuru valley, photo tour of Ladakh, June 2019.

Guest house at the monastery of Lamayuru Gonpa.

Day 6, July 1: Fotula Pass. Valley of Da Khanu through Sandzak and Hangral. Aryan village Donkar, about 200 km.
Early in the morning we go to the pass Fotu La, 4 100 m for the morning photographing:
there is incredibly beautiful in the mornings and before us completely different Lamayuru will appear - the bright oil landscapes of Moon Land will leave and they will be replaced by powerful floating massifs of lazy mountain hills covered with fogs.
This is a completely different beauty, and it seems that you get into another world, another place, separated not by 17 km, but by many thousands.
This Ladakh is beautiful - here landscapes are constantly changing, everything is different here - so different that the time changes with the surrounding nature - it becomes very long, because it is impossible - the illusion of the brain - it is impossible to visit so many different places at the same time.

Upper reaches of the Lamayuru valley, Fotula pass, photo tour to Lamayuru, June 2019.

And then we will go on our way to the valley of Da Khan already on a quite non-tourist road - this is a small route through Sandzak and Hangral, which only local residents use to get to remote villages.
The road is a primer, but the places that we will see on this day have practically preserved their primordiality, there is still no civilization at all - in many villages there is still no electricity.

Sanjak gorge, photo tour of Ladakh, June 2019.

A little bit about the valley of Da Han, which lies our way:
The valley of Da Hanu until recently was closed to tourists and only in 2010 there was an opportunity to freely travel to this valley in the measure.

The villages of the Dha-Hannu valley:
Around 2000 people live in Ladakh of Aryans and live in the territory of 5 villages and only marry within their ethnic group.
It was in these villages that Hitler organized expeditions "for the Aryan blood".
At present, there are two Dardish tribes in the territory of the former Ladak kingdom, who have retained their native language: the Dardas from the Dragon, and the Dardas from Da (Dha).
The first became Muslims in the 16th century.
The most interesting case is represented by darts from Da (Dha - Hanu). They did not accept Muhammad's faith, but Buddhism was not fully accepted by them either - their religious practices more closely resemble the ancient pre-Buddhist religion of Bon.
Thanks to this, they were able to preserve their cultural uniqueness.
Their external dissimilarity and feature is not only in the form and features of the face, but also in the details of their ethnic clothing.
All men and women wear a headdress, the main ornament of which is the red flowers of the Physalis (wild strawberries), which protect them from demons and bring wealth.
In all forms of art, the symbols of the swastika and the sun are present in the drkpa: carved ornaments on houses, ornaments of antique utensils and household utensils.
There are also many natural and astronomical symbols.
Drkpa surprisingly combine mixed traditions with respect to food - they do not eat poultry meat and cows, but keep them for eggs and milk. Eat only lamb.

In the evening we come to the Aryan village Donkar, to our friend Sonam Rinchen, to a new guest house.
Guest house in the village of Donkar.

Day 7, July 2: Aryan village Donkar, a picnic with local women. Portrait photography.
Today, let it be a surprise - we will describe it literally in two words:
we will have a completely non-tourist entertainment - a picnic with local Aryan ladies.
Similar events are not held in Ladakh any more) - but we came to the village to our very close friends and therefore:
in the morning we plan a picnic on the river bank - by the way, the water in the river is delicious, terrificly tasty - real glacial and very clean, the village takes drinking water from the river.
We need to prepare for a picnic and together with the local ladies we will participate in preparing dishes of Aryan cuisine.
Next - a joint trapeze and dance-songs, that's as much as it goes).

Need I say that at all stages, photographers will have the opportunity to engage in photography?)

Today, a walk through the village is planned, a visit to old Aryan houses, where everything was preserved 200-400 years ago, taking photographs in the homes of local residents.
Guest house in the village of Donkar.

Day 8, July 3: Ancient Aryan villages Yes and Khan Yekma, Leh.
Continue our movement through the valley of Da Khan.
Generally Da Khan is such an authentic place and is really present that there are very few tourists here - in fact, there is nowhere to have a bite, there is no tourist service.
I would like, of course, that in this form the valley is preserved longer.
We are wrapped up with food in the morning, and in the afternoon we will have a small picnic lunch somewhere on the banks of the Indus.

In the meantime, we are waiting for the two ancient Aryan villages - Yes and Khanu Yekma.
First Yes: photo tours around the village, studying the life of local residents, taking pictures in homes that are more than 600 years old.
A lot of genre, portrait and landscape photography.
Also, by prior arrangement (and for a separate payment), it is possible to stage a photo shoot with Aryan women in the village. Yes:
national costumes, colorful women's faces.
This photography was made possible due to the fact that we have visited these places for a long time and we have many friends there, usually Aryans do not like to be photographed at all.

With numerous stops for landscape photography we are moving towards the Aryan village of Hanu-Yokma.
We will spend in the village about 2-3 hours: a visit to the local school, stone houses of the village, which are made up of accurately tailored river stones without the use of a cementing mass.
Also we will visit the local church and visit the houses of local residents, and we will also observe and photograph all the stages of hand weaving of canvas fabrics - in Khanu-Yekma it was preserved in its original form.

Near the Buddhist monastery of Chamdei Gonpa, we turn off the main road to the left and begin to ascend to Lake Pangong, through the five thousandth Chang La Pass.
The road will go to the top, and from the height we will see the valleys stretching below us with the drawings of the fields.

The road will reach the Chang La Pass, 5 316 meters, named after the Sadhu Changla Baba, to whom the Hindu temple was dedicated at the pass.
Further, the road will swoop down a beautiful plateau down a beautiful plateau to the small village of Tangst with the Buddhist gon-monastery, which had the same name, bent among the rocks.
We stop for a while in Tangsa, we throw our things into the guest house and go further - on our first date with Lake Pangong Tso.
A kilometer in front of the lake is provided with a stop in the clearing, where there are a lot of manual marmots - this is a Tibetan marmot, you can take pictures of them from a short distance.

The length of the lake is 134 km, width is 5 km. Lake itself is 1/3 owned by Ladakhu (India) and 2/3 by Tibet (the Tibetan territories now under the occupation of China).
A magnificent evening at Pangong: regardless of the weather, all the evenings on Pangong are magnificent.
We are staying in a guest house in the village of Tangtse and we go to the evening photography for Lake Pangong.
We have to drive to the outermost end of Lake Pangong, almost to the border.
